Write down the exact phone or laptop and connection arrangement before purchasing. A demonstration with another computer proves that demonstration's setup. It does not establish that a phone with a similar-looking connector supplies the same video signal or power arrangement.

A useful record is specific: source model, operating system, port, cable and adapter if used. If the screen stays blank, that list narrows the problem. Swapping accessories without recording them can accidentally produce a working configuration that you cannot reproduce later.
