What should an AI-generated meeting action item include?
An action item should state the task, its owner and a deadline if one was actually agreed. It should also preserve enough context to explain the commitment. Missing information should remain visibly unresolved rather than being filled with a plausible-sounding name or date.
Make the commitment explicit
“Review pricing” leaves several questions unanswered. “Alex to review the revised pricing before Thursday's discussion” is actionable if the participants actually agreed to it. An inferred owner or deadline should be presented as something to confirm, not as a recorded commitment.
For an invented exchange, “Someone should check the figures” becomes “Check the figures; owner and date not agreed.” We would keep that uncertainty in the short glasses view too, then use the companion surface to review and assign the task through the team's normal workflow.
Keep an unresolved item honest
These sample rows illustrate the difference between a commitment and a suggestion. They are not notes from an actual meeting.
| What was said | Appropriate action item |
|---|---|
| “I’ll send the revised draft by Thursday.” | Speaker to send the revised draft by Thursday. |
| “Someone should check the figures.” | Check figures; owner and date not agreed. |
| “Could Alex review it? We still need to ask.” | Confirm whether Alex can review; assignment pending. |
