What does a waveguide do in smart glasses?

A waveguide carries a projected image through a transparent optical plate toward the eye. Input coupling introduces light, internal reflection carries it through the plate, and output coupling directs it toward the viewing region. The image source and the waveguide have different jobs.

Follow the light from source to eye

We find the sequence easier to understand than the word waveguide alone: image generation, light transport, then delivery to the eye. The software has already chosen the content before this optical path presents it. Changes to the source, coupling and geometry can therefore change the result even when two products use the same broad category of optics.

Draw the path with those stages labeled. Place the application outside the optical chain: it supplies the content, not the light-guiding mechanism. That distinction helps when a supplier discusses optical efficiency while an app developer is trying to solve text wrapping. They are working on different parts of the same experience.
